History

The Union City Insurance Agency has been in continuous operation in Union City for more than a century, with its beginning traced back to 1895. J.E. Beck, grandfather of E.B. Tanner, was the original founder. During the early years of Union City’s history Mayor W.J. Gardner operated the agency, and through the years several of Union City’s outstanding citizens have been connected with its operation. Among those were Walter Woosley, C.H. Cobb, Dave Peeler, O.E. Beck, C.E. Beck and Mayor J.A. Prieto.

In 1932 Walker Tanner became the active manager and continued until 1946 when his son, E.B. Tanner became a partner and active manager. E.B. Tanner remained active in the agency and was president of the board until his death in April 2004. Today, Congressman John Tanner, son of E.B. Tanner is president and Jim Rippy, Jr. serves as agency manager, a position he has held since 1983.

The Union City Insurance Agency has furnished a vital service to citizens of Obion County in all walks of life. Millions of dollars of claims have been paid to Obion County citizens throughout the years. The agency represents a group of the oldest and largest insurance companies in the world and has never failed to pay any valid claim during its entire existence. All types of insurance and bonds are written protecting Union City homes, businesses, automobiles and industries. Additionally, the life, health and retirement division of Union City Insurance protects thousands of people in Obion County. The cornerstone of the agency’s foundation is service to its policyholders.

In the past several years, Union City Insurance Agency has acquired additional agencies in West Tennessee and has expanded its scope to include West Tennessee and Southwest Kentucky. In 2004, the company adopted a new corporate name: The Westan Insurance Group. Union City Insurance Agency is the flagship agency of the Westan group, which includes BHD Insurance located in Union City, Consolidated Insurance Services of Paris, Carroll Insurance Agency in McKenzie, and Twin Cities Insurance located in Fulton, Kentucky. These agencies all function as independent agencies representing their local communities as well as businesses throughout the region. With over 40 professional agents and staff members, the Westan group is one of the largest agency groups in the state of Tennessee.
